BEEF EMPIRE DAYS CELEBRATES 40 YEARS

The 40th Annual Beef Empire Days Live and Carcass Show is intended to emphasize the economic aspects of commercial cattle feeding and the beef industry to this area. All participating cattle must come from yards who are sponsors of the Beef Empire Days celebration. In addition, cattle entered in an exisiting breed association sponsored event will not be allowed to enter the Beef Empire Days Live & Carcass Show nor will cattle be permitted that are partially or fully owned by a breed association.

Cattle placing in the live and carcass shows are selected to meet the needs of the entire beef industry from the producer to the consumer. All cattle entered will be allowed to compete but those most closely meeting the standards of the industry will have the advantage. Live Show Judge Marcine Moldenhauer will be sorting all entries upon arrival at the fairgrounds and the top placing steers and heifers will be judged at the 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 28 grandstand show.

Ideal carcass weights will range from 750 to 1000 lbs. for steers and heifers. Ribeye area for this weight range should be in the 13 to 16 square inch range. Ideal back fat thickness of both steer and heifer carcasses will range from 0.28 to 0.31 inches. Cattle grading high select or better will be allowed to place in the carcass show and average choice or better cattle will be awarded a bonus.

This show offers you an opportunity to gain valuable information on individual cattle, a chance to improve your ability to correlate live characteristics with desirable carcass traits and helps you continue to provide a desirable product for the consuming public. We encourage you to participate.

LIVE SHOW RULES

1. ELIGIBILITY. Competition is open to any bona fide cattle feeder. Entries will be accepted on any breed or crossbred and will be shown in steer and heifer divisions. Cattle competing in other contests can not be entered in the Beef Empire Days contest.
2. OWNERSHIP AND CERTIFICATION. Entry must have been owned by the exhibitor at least 70 days prior to the show. All entries must have been fed as part of a pen of cattle on feed in a commercial or private feed yard. Breed association cattle will not be allowed to compete
3. GROOMING. Cattle shall not show obvious grooming and will be shown loose in the ring. Exhibitors will not be allowed in the ring at the time of showing.
4. SLAUGHTER. All cattle shown must be slaughtered at Tyson Fresh Meats, Finney County Plant.
5. EXCLUSION FROM THE CARCASS SHOW. The live judge will have the authority to exclude any animal from the carcass show that she considers undesirable from the standpoint of structure, type and growth necessary for profitable cattle production. Those sifted will not be eligible for carcass awards.
6. JUDGES' DECISION. Decisions of the judge will be final. Any complaints will be handled by the show committee and must be submitted in writing.
7. PRE-SLAUGHTER DEATH OR INJURY. Beef Empire Days, Inc. will not be responsible for cattle entered in the show that may die or be injured prior to slaughter at Tyson Fresh Meats.
8. SCHEDULE OF PAYMENT. Beef Empire Days, Inc. will negotiate, just prior to show time, a schedule of payment from Tyson Fresh Meats. Cattle will likely be sold on Grade and Yield basis.

GRANDSTAND & CARCASS JUDGING CONTESTS

Everyone viewing the Live Show will want to test their own judging skills by participating in the Grandstand Judging contest. Categories of competition range from youth to the expert. The carcass judging contest will take place during the Carcass Show at Tyson Fresh Meats on Saturday evening, May 31, 2008. CARCASS SHOW RULES

1. CARCASS SHOW. Carcasses will be available for viewing at Tyson Fresh Meats, Saturday, May 31, 2008 at approximately 9:30 p.m.
2. ELIGIBILITY. Carcasses grading USDA Select, Choice or Prime having a cutability grade of 1, 2 or 3 are eligible for awards.
3. CARCASS GUIDELINES. All carcasses will be allowed to compete. Those falling outside the ranges of 750-1000 lb. carcass weight and greater than 16 inch ribeyes will be penalized. Additionally, those falling outside of 0.28-0.31 inch backfat or having KPH fat greater than 2.5% will be penalized. Penalties and bonuses will be dependent on the degree of deviation from these guidelines.
4. CARCASS SIFTING. Carcasses grading low Select, Standard or Utility will be graded and data will be reported in the carcass summary. However, those cattle may not be displayed at the Carcass Show if cooler space is limited. This rule will not apply to any cattle placing in the Live Show.
5. JUDGE'S DECISION. Decisions of the judge will be final. Any complaints will be handled by the show committee and must be submitted in writing.

2008 ENTRIES

Entry forms are due TUESDAY, MAY 27, 2008 AT 1:00 P.M.. They may be requested in writing or in person from Beef Empire Days at 206 E. Fulton Terrace, Garden City, KS 67846 or by calling (620) 275-6807. The entry fee is $50.00 per head.

2008 LIVE AND CARCASS SHOW AWARDS

EARL C. BROOKOVER MEMORIAL

In honor of Earl C. Brookover, Beef Empire Days will award a traveling bronze to the feed yard winning the Overall Grand Champion of the 2008 Live and Carcass Show. This animal may be a steer or heifer.

OVERALL GRAND CHAMPION CARCASS AWARD

Since 1993, Cargill Meat Solutions (formerly Excel) has been awarding the Overall Grand Champion Carcass Award. This award consists of two bronzes given annually to the feed yard and the owner of the Overall Grand Champion Carcass winner. This animal may be a steer or a heifer.

GRAND CHAMPION HEIFER CARCASS AWARD

Pfizer Animal Health awards the MGA Grand Champion Heifer Carcass Award.

Grand Champions will be determined from the combination of live and carcass placings in the steer and heifer divisions. To be eligible for the Grand Champion award, an entry must place a premium in both the Live and Carcass Shows.

Awards and Premiums for the Beef Empire Days Live and Carcass Show will be presented at the Beef Empire Days Awards Dinner, sponsored by Farm Credit of Southwest Kansas and Pfizer Animal Health on Saturday, May 31, 2008 at 5:30 p.m. at the Wheat Lands Convention Center, 1408 E. Fulton Street, Garden City, Kansas.
