Cattle Feeder Challenge

The Feeder Cattle Challenge will be new to Beef Empire Days 2012. This will be a pen of 3 jackpot contest with net profitability deciding the winner. A local order buyer will buy cattle. A host feedyard will be chosen by the BED board of directors and will purchase a pen of 650-750 lb steers or heifers that will be delivered the week of January 9, 2012. The number of head will be based on pre-entry commitments turned into the BED office no later than January 1, 2012.

There will be a jackpot cost of $1000 per head ($3000 for the pen) paid before January 1, 2012. Once the jackpot cost is paid this gives you the right to purchase 3 head of cattle at the FCC auction. The auction will take place at the host feedyard January 14, 2012 and the cattle will be available to preview 2 hours before the auction begins. Pen averages, in weights and costs will be available at that time. The cattle will be auctioned off 1 head at a time, in dollars per hundred, for the participants to begin building their pens of 3. From this time forward you will retain ownership of the pen of 3. The last 3 head of the auction will be sold at a fixed price. This will be the average value of the auction plus $100.

All associated feeding costs of the pen of 3 will be pulled from the final payment check. These costs will be billed using the average of the pen. All health issues will be billed on an individual animal basis.

In the event that the total costs of the cattle are not met from the auction proceeds each individual pen of 3 will be billed an average amount to cover the cost of the cattle. If the auction proceeds are greater than the cost of the cattle, the overage will be added to the jackpot.

The pen of three will be harvested at National Beef using the USPB grid during the week of May 22nd. The cattle will be fed for approximately 120 to 135 days. The contest will begin on the day of the auction and end on the day they go to harvest. The pens will be placed on the net profit per pen. (The BED Index will NOT be used in the placing of the cattle). In the event of a tie proceeds from the jackpot will be split evenly between the two pens.

10% of total jackpot entry fees will be retained by BED Inc. for the promotion of the beef industry and educational programs. All awards will be announced at the Awards banquet Saturday June 2, 2012.
